Merino Qualities

Our Merino is soft and lightweight against a newborns new skin. This makes merino perfect to wear all year around, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Merino is a super sustainable, annually renewable fibre, which is naturally grown and it is biodegradable. Our Merino is also free of harsh chemicals. Eva + Archie's merino is guaranteed to be of New Zealand and Australian Origin and meets the RWS (Responsible Wool Standard), which means that our wool farmers treat their sheep with respect and follow ethical practices.

Merino wool has exceptional levels of comfort. The secret lies within the extremely small diameter of the individual Merino fibres which range from 13 to 24 microns. Our Merino is 18.5 microns which is an impressive figure when you consider that the diameter of the average human hair is 60 microns. The exceptional softness of Merino wool clothing often takes people by surprise. This eliminates any itchiness or prickling sensations against sensitive young skin - a must for babies clothing.

Temperature regulating

Newborn babies find it hard to regulate their body temperature. Merino wool is breathable and wicks away moisture, keeping a baby dry and warm. Wool fibres can absorb large quantities of moisture vapour then move it away to evaporate into the air. This quality is especially important as the wool will keep them much dryer than any other fabric.

Merino wool offers many health benefits to babies and infants. The heat regulation properties of Merino wool creates a temperature controlled cocoon around a sleeping child resulting in a more restful sleep. It can take up to 18 months for newborns to be able to regulate their own body temperature and overheating babies can tragically fall victim to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Merino wool has been shown to reduce the incidence of SIDS in sleeping babies thanks to its moisture absorption and temperature regulation properties.

NZ Plunket recommends merino for sleeping as it’s a natural fibre.

Comfortable

The merino fibre can stretch over 30% and still recover to its natural shape. Merino is 6 times stronger than cotton, and Merino wool's natural durability makes it an ideal choice for babies clothing - studies have shown that Merino wool fibres can be bent up to 30,000 times without breaking. This essentially means that clothes made from Merino wool will stand up to repeated washings without looking old and worn out. Merino can also absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before it feels damp. Merino is UV resistant with a sun protection UPF of at least 50. And it is less likely to grow bacteria or retain odours.

Fire Resistant

Merino is fire resistant, the safest of fabrics for your precious newborn. If ignited it will burn slowly and may even self extinguish.

( It exceeds Fire Safety requirements for BS 5722)
